High-contrast black and white documentary photograph of a farmer woman picking apples on a misty hillside orchard at early morning. Shot from below and slightly to the side with a 50mm lens at f/2.8, the photographer crouched low among the wet grass so the woman is framed against the pale blank sky, her arm reaching up into a laden branch. Fog rolls through the rows of trees, diffusing the low morning sun into a soft glowing rim of backlight that separates her silhouette and the fruit from the misty background. She is caught mid-reach, a basket of apples on her hip, her head turned toward the branch, unaware of the camera. A cluster of out-of-focus apples on a low branch in the foreground partly frames the left edge. Shot on Ilford HP5 Plus 400, pushed for grit, deep blacks and bright blown highlights in the fog, visible coarse film grain, subtle halation on the sunlit droplets, slight vignette, a touch of underexposure in the shadows.
